The big question is …

Members and guests who attended the Stonyhill Bowls Club quiz night on April 21 2012

QUESTION TIME: Members and guests pictured at the Stonyhill Bowls Club fundraising quiz night.

Around 70 members and guests attended a quiz night at Stonyhill on Saturday April 21 2012 and helped to raise funds for club improvements.

First question of the night was ‘Who wants to read out the questions?’ as regular quizmistress Sue Gower and husband Phil were stranded at home awaiting an AA mechanic to fix their car.

JUST THE TICKET: Understudy quizmistress Cheryl Cameron announces a winner in the raffle orgainsed by Ann Betts (centre) and Keith Theobald (right).

Cheryl Cameron stepped in and skilfully completed the 10 categories which included Children’s Time, Numbers, Science and Nature, Movies, About England, Sport, and Food and Drink.

The top cash prize in the quiz was won by the Hyland family scoring 120 out of a possible 146. Brian and Jenny were supported by sister Joan and husband Michael, son Richard and wife Beth, and friends Nick and Judy Street.

Runners-up were club members Norman Pascall, Keith Seelig, Les Powell and Ann Betts, and friends Brenda and Philip Pettennuzzo, and Pat and John Coffey. They were just two points behind the winners and won £15 which they have donated to Brentwood Community Hospital eye specialist Simon Ruben’s charity appeal. He was aiming to raise £2,500 for the RNIB by running in the London Marathon the following day.

Les said: “Dividing £15 by eight was just too difficult so we agreed to donate our prize to charity!”

Club member Fred Faulkener’s team were also prizewinners. They picked up the award for the team most likely to improve and shared a box of Cadbury’s Creme Eggs!

A ploughman’s supper was served at half-time and at full-time, raffle organisers Ann Betts and Keith Theobald supervised the prize draw.

Quiz night organiser Stewart Cameron has thanked everyone who attended and helped to make the event such a big success. And he has paid tribute to staff and volunteers for helping behind the scenes.

Wanted – unwanted gifts!

Unwanted giftDo you have an unwanted gift that you’d like to put to good use? If the answer is yes, Stonyhill Bowls Club welcomes raffle prize donations from members to help raise vital funds for club improvements.

Raffle organiser Ann Betts says: “At present, we buy most of our raffle prizes so donations will help to reduce costs and therefore increase the amount we raise for the benefit of members. All donations will be gratefully received.”

Suitable items can be handed in at the office.

He wants players for the 2pm Tuesday open triples and the 2pm Thursday mixed fours.

If you’d like to join these teams, call 01277 650227.

UPDATE: Roy has now found players for Tuesday but is still looking for players for the mixed fours on Thursday.

Ups and downs of rink fees

There’s good news and bad news about the cost of a game at Stonyhill Bowls Club.

First the bad news: Rink fees will go up from £3.20 to £3.30 from Monday April 30 2012.

Now the good news: The 10p rise is below the rate of inflation which means that, in real terms, the cost of a game will be slightly less than a year ago.

The price change, announced at the recent annual general meeting, is one of a number of measures designed to secure the financial future of Stonyhill.

Task force moving in

Stonyhill members are being invited to rally round to give the club its annual spring clean.

The club will be open from 9am to 4pm from Monday April 23 to Friday April 27 when volunteers will be setting to work on the big clean-up and carrying out vital maintenance work.

If you can help out for a couple of hours or more, please add your name to the volunteer list in the porch or use the online contact form to let the office know when you can lend a hand.
